The I-400 was a submarine the likes of which the world had never seen before.
At the time of its completion, the I-400 and its sister ships were the largest and probably most modern submarines in the world.
With a length of 122 m, a width of 12 m and a displacement of 6,560 tons, they were as large as the destroyers of the time and, thanks to their astonishing range, could circumnavigate the earth one and a half times.
Loaded with three Seiran bombers, a planned attack on the Panama Canal was just moments away from being carried out.
She was diverted to attack the gathering Allied invasion fleet at Ulithi, and the war ended before the U-boats could launch their attack.
