The Britannic was laid up in the shipyard in Belfast for several months before being used in the war until 1915 when she was used as a hospital ship and to transport the wounded and supplies. On November 21, 1916, the Britannic was so badly damaged by an explosion (torpedo or mine hit) that she sank in less than 1 hour. The high rate of sinking was due to open bulkhead doors and portholes. During the evacuation of the ship, the first lifeboats, which were launched too quickly, were destroyed by the Britannic's still rotating propellers before an orderly evacuation could be carried out. 30 people died in the shipwreck, but only five by drowning. The rest of the approximately 1,000 passengers were rescued.
