But on its maiden voyage to New York, the Titanic collided with an iceberg on April 14, 1912 at around 11:40 p.m. (board time).
The ship hits the iceberg on the starboard side and sinks into the icy waters of the Atlantic after two hours and forty minutes. Only 712 people survived the disaster.
