When launched in 1936, the Scharnhorst and her sister ship Gneisenau represented a completely new battlecruiser design.
Departing from Brest, she posed the greatest threat to Allied merchant shipping until she successfully escaped north through the English Channel in February 1942.
On December 26, 1943 she was sunk off northern Norway by the HMS Duke of York.
