The Bismarck, the flagship of the German Navy, was the largest German warship alongside the Tirpitz and had a displacement of 50,900 tons and a crew of 2,092.
Commissioned on August 24, 1940, it set sail on May 18, 1941 for Operation Rheinübung.
However, it was discovered early on by British air reconnaissance along with the Prinz Eugen.
When it encountered the Hood, the latter was sunk by the Bismarck on May 24, 1941.
After a long pursuit, it was hit by an aircraft torpedo on May 26, 1941 and was intercepted by the British battleships King George V and H.M.S. Rodney.
On May 27, the ship's own crew sank the Bismarck 490 km off the French coast.
