HMS Devonshire was the first County class destroyer and the first Batch 1 ship of the Royal Navy.
The ship was built by Cammell Laird at Birkenhead, near Liverpool.
Displacing 5,440 tons (6,850 tons full load), Devonshire was named after the English county of Devon.
She was launched on 10 June 1960 and delivered to the Navy two years later.
She was decommissioned in 1978 and spent the next six years in Portsmouth Harbour when a proposed sale to the Egyptian Navy fell through.
For such a remarkable ship, she would meet a rather ignominious end as a target ship, sunk by HMS Splendid in the North Atlantic on 17 July 1984, just days after serving as a floating target during Sea Eagle anti-ship missile trials.
