After the start of the Second World War, the Royal Navy built eight O-class destroyers and eight more P-class destroyers as part of the war emergency program. The Oribi was the first O-class ship to be commissioned on July 5, 1941. The ships served mainly in the North Sea and were primarily active as convoy escorts.
