The Royal Navy (RN) played a crucial role in the recapture of the South Atlantic islands, and a key element of the naval task force sent to carry out this mission was HMS Invincible (R05). Invincible was the lead ship in a class of three light aircraft carriers.
She entered service on July 11, 1980, just two years before the outbreak of the Falklands conflict.
In fact, under an agreement reached in February 1982, she was slated for sale to the Royal Australian Navy at a price of £175 million.
Instead, she steamed alongside the aircraft carrier Hermes toward the South Atlantic just three days after Argentina's invasion of the Falkland Islands on April 2, 1982.
Her extensive aircraft inventory included eight Sea Harriers and twelve Sea King helicopters, which would take off and land on her 170 m long ski jump deck in continuous use against Argentine forces.
Invincible and her aircraft played an important role in the recapture of the islands.
