She was commissioned in 1937 and named after the Battle of Yorktown in 1781.
The Yorktown was the type vessel of the Yorktown class, which was developed based on experience with the converted Lexington-class battlecruisers.
The vessel took part in the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942 and was sunk in June 1942 during the Battle of Midway.
