The USS Hornet was completed in 1941 as the third Yorktown-class aircraft carrier.
She is best known for her central role in the so-called Doolittle Raid on April 18, 1942, the first US air raid on the Japanese home islands.
Just a few months later, in October 1942, the Hornet was badly damaged by Japanese bombers in the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands and finally sunk on October 27th.
The majority of the crew could be rescued beforehand by the American escort ships, but 111 men died.
