The nuclear-powered Enterprise was the first aircraft carrier of its kind and was one of the largest ships ever built.
This gigantic aircraft carrier was put into service on November 25, 1961.
Eight water-cooled reactors generated a total power of 300,000 horsepower, allowing the ship to reach an average speed of 35 knots.
The water displacement was 75,700 tons and the flight deck was 76.8 meters wide.
An average of 414 officers and 4,260 crew members were on board.
Since the Enterprise was independent of external supplies thanks to its nuclear drive, large fuel depots were available for the onboard aircraft.
The largest and most modern aircraft in the U.S. Navy could be operated from the Enterprise.
