SORYU Class of twelve non-nuclear submarines (SS) of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) built in Kobe shipyards of Mitsubishi and Kawasaki. The first two boats commissioned in 2009 and 2010, Soryu (SS-501) and Unryu (SS-502), inherited the names of Japanese aircraft carriers from WWII, and the class has the largest tonnage displacement of any JMSDF vessel since the Second World War.
Updated from the Oyashio class, diesel-electric SORYU uses four Stirling Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) engines, two Kawasaki diesel engines and two electric motors. Armament includes Type 89 & UGM-84 Harpoon Anti-ship Missiles (AShM).
Other boats in SORYU Class: Hakuryu (SS-503), Kenryu (SS-504), Zuiryu (SS-505), Kokuryu (SS-506), Jinryu (SS-507), Sekiryu (SS-508) and four as yet un-named craft SS-509, SS-510, SS-511 & SS-512.
