During the Second World War, the US Navy used a large number of torpedo boats:
The Higgins with a length of 78 feet and the ELCO with 77 and 80 feet.
Each model differed from the others apart from length, by configuration, armament and various other details.
The 80-foot ELCOs made up the largest number of boats: they were built in five construction lots with a total of about 300 examples.
Made of mahogany wood and powered by three 1350 hp Packard 4M-2500 engines (increased to 1500 hp in the last series), they easily reached more than 40 knots.
The equipment and armament were constantly updated and improved thanks to operational experience and the progressive change in tasks: as the conflict progressed, the PT boats changed their original task of attacking and interdicting shipping and took on more of a gunboat role, operating close to the coast or in channels.
This depicts the PT 596 and an 80 foot ELCO from the last batch produced.
