M.T.M. Barchino with crew

Based on the experiences and successes of the Italian Regia Marina in the First World War, it continued to develop various underwater and surface attack craft after the war.
The Motoscafo da Turismo Modificato (M.T.M.), for example, was designed to enable a covert and rapid approach to targets with little risk of detection by enemy forces.
When approaching the target, the pilot adjusted the rudder to maintain direction and guided the fast small boat on a collision course to the target.
The pilot, who was at the stern of the boat, jumped off the boat at a safe distance before the collision.
The explosive charge placed in the bow of the Barchino detonated on impact with the target.
The most successful engagement of the "Barchino" by the Italian Regio Marina was the attack led by Luigi Faggioni on the heavy cruiser on HMS York of the Royal Navy in Suda Bay, Crete in 1941....
