Since the First World War, the Italian Regia Marina received great attention for the development of small and fast ships armed with torpedoes.
The motor torpedo boats, better known as MAS, were developed from civilian ships.
The results achieved during the First World War were remarkable, when the Austro-Hungarian naval cruisers "Wien" and "Szent István" were sunk on behalf of Commandante Luigi Rizzo.
Unsuited to either straits or shallow waters like the Adriatic, the Italian Navy continued to work to improve the performance of the small but fast motor torpedoes.
The MAS 500, equipped with Isotta-Fraschini petrol engines, became more powerful and reliable during the Second World War.
They were used both as motor torpedoes and as submarine hunters for dropping depth charges.
They could reach a maximum speed of 40 knots and were armed with two 450mm torpedoes
