With a waterline length of 256 m, a beam of 38.9 m, a displacement of around 70,000 tons and nine 46cm guns that had a maximum range of 41 km and were able to penetrate 43cm thick armor from a distance of 30 km, the Yamato was a truly colossal ship.
She took part in the Battle of Leyte Gulf and the Battle of Midway, among others.
On April 7, 1945, she was attacked by over three hundred US aircraft on her way to Okinawa and sank to the bottom of the ocean.
