It took part in the US Air Force's Enhanced Tactical Fighter competition in 1981, but lost to the F-15E Strike Eagle.
The two prototypes were mothballed until they were handed over to NASA in 1988 for further aeronautical experiments.
Both aircraft were completely retired in 2009 and stored at Edwards Air Force Base.
