The F-4 Phantom II is an American two-seat, twin-engine, long-range, all-weather supersonic interceptor and fighter-bomber aircraft originally developed by McDonnell Aircraft for the United States Navy.
Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 323 (VMFA-323) is a carrier-based aviation squadron of the United States Marine Corps.
When the United States intervened in the war in South Vietnam, the Death Rattlers were stationed at Da Nang Air Base beginning October 25, 1965.
Combat operations began the day after their arrival.
The squadron lost its first aircraft a week after arrival when the squadron's senior officer was shot down by a surface-to-air missile over North Vietnam.
It was the only Navy F-4 shot down by a SAM during the war.
The squadron remained in Vietnam until 1969, flying combat missions from Da Nang and Chu Lai.
