The Soviet single-seat fighter (NATO code name: Flogger) entered service in the early 1970s as a replacement for the fast and maneuverable but operationally limited Mig-21 and was notable for the introduction of the variable swept wing design.
Due to its Tumanskiy afterburner turbojet engine, the Mig-23 was able to reach a top speed of Mach 2.3.
To fulfill its main task, it was armed with a 23 mm cannon.
It could also be loaded with various combinations of air-to-air missiles under its pylons.
The “BN” version was developed for attack and close support missions.
The fighter was widely used by Warsaw Pact countries and also by the air forces of several former Soviet-backed countries.
The MiG-23 has therefore played an active role in many regional conflicts and taken on a variety of operational roles
