The F Mk.XVIII was a sort of 'Super Spitfire'. It was a development of the Mk.XIV with a Rolls Royce Griffon engine, but was fitted with a number of improvements. In addition to several improvements for the pilot, the F Mk.XVIII also benefited from increased fuel capacity and strengthened wings, which enabled it to carry either rockets or bombs in addition to its cannon and machine gun armament.
Out of a total production of 300 aircraft, the RAF received two versions of this fighter, the F.Mk.XVIII with the standard E-wing and the FR.Mk.XVIII which included a camera for photo reconnaissance. Too late to see action during World War II, these powerful Spitfires were used against communist guerrillas as part of 'Operation Firedog' and during the Malayan Emergency.
