A platoon of four Tigers was deployed near Leningrad on 23 September 1942.
Since they were deployed in the swampy, wooded terrain, their movement was largely restricted to roads and tracks, which severely limited their operational capability.
Many of these early Tigers had problems with the transmission, which could not cope with the heavy weight of the vehicle.
It took a while for drivers to learn not to overload the engine and transmission.
One of the Tigers got stuck in the swampy terrain and had to be abandoned.
It could be recovered largely undamaged, so the Soviets were able to analyse its construction.
