It was designed and built to compete in Group 5 competitions and achieved some victories.
BMW then decided to create a mono-brand championship called “BMW M1 ProCar”.
The cars taking part in the championship were equipped with a powerful 470 HP engine and were driven by many famous names from the Formula 1 world such as Piquet, De Angelis, Pironi and Lauda.
The Procar Championship was extremely popular and enjoyed significant media coverage during this time.
The championship itself ran for two years and was won by Niki Lauda in 1979 and by Nelson Piquet the following season.
