Abarth's development included several changes and improvements, starting with reducing body weight through the use of lighter materials.
Then new fenders were added to allow the use of larger wheels and new air intakes were designed on the hood and sides to optimize cooling of the mechanics.
The engine was a 4 cylinder longitudinal engine, characterized by the use of light alloy heads and 4 valves per cylinder.
The Fiat 131 Abarth was built from 1976 and was used in the World Rally Championship, where it achieved important results such as three manufacturers' championships, a pilot's championship and an FIA trophy.
It took part in international competitions until 1982, when it was replaced by Lancia brand vehicles.
