As a rally vehicle, the Renault 5 Turbo was registered for participation in the World Rally Championship in 1981 in accordance with the FIA regulations in Group 4, and between 1982 and 1986 in Group B.
The vehicle won three world championship races: Monte Carlo Rally 1981, Tour de Corse 1982 and Tour de Corse 1985.
The driver in all three cases was Jean Ragnotti - in the first two victories with co-driver Jean-Marc Andrié, and in 1985 with co-driver Pierre Thimonier.
