The Cagiva Elefant was introduced in the early 1980s as an enduro motorcycle with small to medium displacement engines. After Caviga took over Ducati, commercial production gradually developed and from 1985 onwards included the more powerful high-performance two-cylinder engine.
The Cagiva Elefant competed against German and Japanese motorcycles in the prestigious Paris-Dakar “off-road” rally in 1987.
The bike was characterized by its distinctive large fairing that covered the tubular steel and light alloy trellis frame.
The air-cooled two-cylinder engine produced 80 hp at 8,500 rpm and enabled the Italian motorcycle to reach a maximum off-road speed of 185 km/h.
The design reflected a “typical” Sahara configuration, with protective fairing, Öhlins off-road shock absorbers and low front fender.
