The Fiat 131 Abarth was built on the frame of the two-door Fiat sedan.
Abarth's development took into account several modifications and improvements, starting with reducing weight through lighter materials.
Then some new fenders were installed to accommodate larger wheels and new air intakes were constructed on the hood and sides to optimize cooling of the mechanicals.
The engine was a 4-cylinder longitudinal engine, characterized by the use of a light alloy head and 4 valves per cylinder
It was built from 1976 and was used in the World Rally Championship, where it won three Manufacturers' World Championships, an FIA Drivers' Cup and a Drivers' World Championship.
It took part in international competitions until 1982 and was then replaced by Lancia brand vehicles.
Some of the sponsors' liveries of the time have become icons in the history of off-road racing.
