Competing were the American Bantam Company, Willys Overland and Ford Motor Co.
The choice fell on the Willys prototype, which went into series production in early 1941 after an initial series of 1,500 vehicles and achieved a total production of 640,000 units, of which 277,000 were manufactured under license by Ford.
This made the Jeep the most frequently produced light vehicle in the war industry during the Second World War.
