It was mass-produced throughout the war, and around 8,000 units accounted for over a third of total German tank production during the war.
As the backbone of the German Panzer divisions, it was often referred to as their "workhorse".
The Pz.Kpfw. VI was continually improved throughout its long career, and the Ausf. H is generally considered the definitive model in terms of both performance and production numbers.
More examples were built than any other variant, at 3,774.
The Ausf. H is broadly divided into early, mid and late production versions, with the early H model being closely related to the preceding late "G" model.
Both versions shared the same chassis and road wheels.
Armament consisted of a powerful, long-barreled KwK40 L/48 cannon and two 7.92mm MG34 machine guns.
The Maybach HL120TRM engine also remained the same, but the Ausf.H was fitted with an improved SSG-77 transmission.
The additional weight of about 1.5 tons, due to the additional armor and ammunition, however, lowered the top speed to 38 km/h, which was 2 km/h slower than the G. The Ausf.H was mass-produced from April 1943 to July 1944.
