The 3.7 cm Flak 18 was a larger version of the 2 cm Flak 30 and was developed in 1935 but was rejected, among other things, because of its low target speed. A significantly improved version was the Flak 36. A new mechanical sight, the Zeiss-Uhrwerk-Flakvisier 37, and a modified carriage turned the Flak 36 into the Flak 37. It became the standard defense weapon against low-flying aircraft and was used in batteries 9-12 guns deployed. It was also installed on trains, ships, submarines, anti-aircraft towers and a variety of SPGs. The Luftwaffe alone had 4,211 guns in action in August 1944.
