The Pz.B. developed in 1939 41 relied on a principle from 1903 in which ammunition consisted of a soft-jacketed projectile and the barrel of a weapon was conical in shape to achieve greater penetrating power. At the Pz.B. 41, the inside diameter of the barrel narrowed from 2.8 cm at the breech to 2 cm at the muzzle, so that the Panzergranate 42 achieved a muzzle velocity of 1,402 m/s and, depending on the impact angle, armor of 41 to 49 mm from a distance of 800 meters could break through. The Pz.B. was mostly used by fighter and paratrooper units. It could be mounted on its own wheels, hung in a special trailer or pushed along its rails, or pulled on an infantry cart. But it was also used on vehicles such as the Sd.Kfz. 221, Sd.Kfz. 250 and 251.
