To make it more mobile, the carriage was mounted on a large two-axle trailer (M51 - .50 Multiple Machine Gun Carriage), but this proved too cumbersome.
In the end, the carriage was mounted on the single-axle M20 trailer and given the designation M55.
The trailer was introduced into the US Army in 1943, and by 1953 about 10,000 had been produced.
It was usually pulled by a 2½-ton truck, but lighter vehicles could also do the job.
With a rate of fire of 450-575 rounds per minute, the M55 was effective against both low-flying aircraft and ground targets.
The weapon was also used during the Korean War and even in the Vietnam War.
