The 5 cm PaK 38 anti-tank gun was developed by Rheinmetall-Borsig AG in 1938 as a successor to the 3.7 cm PaK 36. It entered service in December 1940 and one of its first tasks was to fend off Soviet tanks when Operation Barbarossa began in June 1941.
In fact, the PaK 38's 5 cm L/60 was one of the few weapons at the time capable of penetrating the 45 mm thick, angled armor of the Soviet T-34 tank.
The development of a tungsten-core Panzergranate-40 projectile further improved its anti-tank properties.
The gun weighed 830 kg and was only 1.05 m high. A well-trained crew of five could achieve a rate of fire of 13 rounds per minute.
