However, the fall of France delayed production until 1942 due to urgent reorders of the 2-pounder.
The 6-pounder Mk II was a 57 mm gun, originally produced with a .43 caliber barrel.
When first introduced into service, it could penetrate the armor of any German or Italian tank likely to be encountered.
Later Mk IV guns had the longer L/50 barrel with a muzzle brake, increasing muzzle velocity.
The final version was the 6-pounder Mk IV on Carriage Mk III, commonly referred to as the airborne version.
This had a reduced width with shortened axles and a redesigned armor shield.
The length was also shortened by the use of two-piece spars connected by a socket and bolt. These modifications allowed the anti-tank gun to be transported in the Horsa troop transport.
The guns were normally towed by the airborne version of the jeep.
It was issued to Royal Artillery airborne anti-tank platoons assigned to the 1st and 6th Airborne Divisions of the British Army and the Polish Airborne Brigade.
