Operation Marita. This is what Germany called its plan to invade Greece in April 1941.
In fact, Germany intervened after Italy's failed invasion began the previous October. Greece had repelled this first invasion and even launched a counterattack in March 1941.
As a result, on April 6, 680,000 German soldiers with 1,200 tanks and 700 aircraft launched their invasion of Greece from Bulgarian territory, bypassing the bulk of the Greek troops near the Albanian border.
The Metaxas defense line was overrun, and small contingents of troops from Australia, Britain and New Zealand were unable to stop the onslaught.
By the end of the month, mainland Greece was in German hands, and then German troops also landed on Crete and captured it in May 1941.
