Weighing 43 tons, they were named after the wife of Gustav Krupp, owner of the Krupp weapons works.
These huge howitzers, with a firing range of 15 km, were first used by Germany in 1914 as they advanced through Belgium.
Carried in parts, transported by rail and assembled on site, their 820 kg shells proved devastating against the Belgian forts, but were somewhat less effective against the more robust French fortresses.
These howitzers were also used as siege weapons on the Eastern Front.
By 1917, wear on the barrels made them less accurate and extremely vulnerable to return fire once the enemy had spotted them.
As a result, they were decommissioned after the Battle of Verdun.
