In the years leading up to the Second World War, the United States Armed Forces undertook a complete modernisation of its artillery capabilities to increase its efficiency and effectiveness.
One result of this modernisation project was the development of the 155/23 howitzer.
The gun was first produced in 1942 as a medium artillery piece and served the US Army throughout World War II.
It could use different types of ammunition and reached a maximum range of 14600 metres.
The gun proved to be very robust and reliable.
It was also used by the US Army during the Korean War and also during the Vietnam War(M114) before it was eventually replaced by the more modern M198 howitzer.
