To better meet the logistical requirements in the difficult environmental conditions of the Eastern Front, the Wehrmacht developed crawler tractors that could pull various trailer loads and carry different loads, including ammunition and supplies.
The official designation of this series of vehicles, which were extremely versatile in use, was "Raupenschlepper-Ost".
The RSO was built predominantly by the Austrian company Steyr, who also developed an anti-tank version that was simple and inexpensive to manufacture and armed with the reliable and formidable 7.5 cm PaK 40.
The vehicle had essentially the same technical structure as the tractor and, due to its use in direct contact with the enemy, had increased frontal protection.
