To cope with the poor road conditions on the Eastern Front, the Germans built crawler tractors that were used to pull all kinds of vehicles and transport various loads from ammunition to food.
The RSO /1 was built by the Steyr Werke in then-annexed Austria and bore the official designation "Raupenschlepper-Ost."
It had a standard sheet steel cab, but a wooden load floor.
It proved ideal for the mud and slush conditions on the Russian front.
The vehicles were part of the desperate German efforts to avoid defeat by the overwhelming Soviet armies.
