It entered service in 1957 and served until 1974, when the concept of the heavy battle tank was considered obsolete.
After the tanks proved to be not very reliable, the M103A1 version was produced from 1959.
219 vehicles were converted.
These were given a new sight (Stereoscopic T52) and an M14 ballistic computer, a coaxial machine gun was removed and a new electric turret rotation system was installed.
The US Army received 72 tanks of this version on loan from the USMC stocks;
These were assigned to the 7th US Army in Germany.
In 1963 the vehicles were returned to the USMC.
