The Leopard 2A6M CAN is the Canadian variant of the Leopard 2A6M main battle tank with mine protection. The first 20 tanks of this variant were lent by the German Bundeswehr to increase the firepower and protection of Canadian troops operating in southern Afghanistan. The borrowed tanks carried German MG3 machine guns and received SLAT spaced armour.
Because these tanks were originally only on loan, the air conditioning system could not be installed at first, as only minimal modifications could be made. The crew wore cooling waistcoats instead. The borrowed German tanks later became the property of the Canadian Forces and could be further upgraded, while former Dutch Leopard 2A6s were adapted to German Leopard 2A6M specifications and handed over to the Bundeswehr as replacements for the borrowed tanks.
The Canadian Leopard 2s in Afghanistan were later fitted with air conditioning and Saab's Barracuda camouflage mats, designed to reduce exposure to solar radiation by 50 per cent.
