The T-80U main battle tank is a further development of the T-80.
It entered service with the Soviet Army in 1985.
The T-80U has a welded hull and a cast turret.
The armour of this KPz has been improved compared to the previous version.
It has composite armour and is equipped with built-in contact 5-ERA blocks.
The main battle tank is also equipped with automatic fire extinguishing and NBC protection systems.
The T-80U is armed with a fully stabilised 125mm smoothbore gun equipped with an automatic loader.
It fires armour-piercing, APDS, HEAT and HE-FRAG rounds.
The tank can also fire 9M119M Refleks anti-tank missiles.
These missiles have a maximum range of 5 km and can destroy low-flying helicopters.
The secondary armament consists of a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun and a 12.7mm machine gun mounted on top.
The T-80U main battle tank was originally produced with a GTD-1000TF gas turbine engine with a power output of 1100 hp.
Tanks produced in the early 1990s were fitted with a more powerful GTD-1250 gas turbine engine with 1250 hp.
