It is based on the MT-LBu multi-purpose chassis.
It is designed to destroy and suppress infantry forces and firepower, destroy field fortifications, create passages in minefields and barbed wire barriers, and fight against enemy artillery, grenade launchers and armored vehicles.
It is the world's first mass-produced amphibious self-propelled howitzer with a tracked drive, of which over 10,000 units were produced.
The hermetically welded hull has armor with up to 20 mm thick steel plates against projectiles. Water obstacles can be overcome by swimming - propelled by the tracks.
The 2S1 Gvozdika was introduced in 1972 and is in service in over 40 countries.
