The Hummel was a German, fully tracked heavy self-propelled gun that was used from 1943 to provide mobile artillery support for tank divisions. The official designation was “15 cm sFH 18/1 on gun carriage III/IV (Sf)”, the vehicle number was Sd.Kfz. 165. The name “Hummel” was initially a troop or suggestive name and was no longer officially used in February 1944.

The vehicle was based on the specially developed gun carriage III/IV. Components of the Panzerkampfwagen III and IV were combined. The chassis and essential parts of the hull came from the Panzer IV, while the drive, transmission and driving wheels were based on components from the Panzer III. The engine was located in the middle of the vehicle, which created space in the rear area for the large, open-topped fighting compartment.

The main armament was the 15 cm heavy field howitzer 18/1 (sFH 18/1) L/30. It used the upper carriage of the sFH 18 and was intended for indirect fire combat. The gun could be aimed approximately 15° to the left and right. The Hummel only carried 18 rounds, which is why specially developed ammunition vehicles on Hummel chassis were used to supply the guns.

The crew usually consisted of six men. The fighting compartment was only lightly armored and open at the top. The armor was primarily used to protect against infantry weapons and shrapnel, not to fight enemy tanks. Depending on the area, the hull had around 15 to 30 mm of armor, while the gun structure was only around 10 mm thick.

The Hummel was powered by a Maybach HL 120 TRM V12 gasoline engine with 300 hp. With a combat weight of around 24 t, it reached a top speed of around 42 km/h. The vehicle was around 7.17 m long, 2.97 m wide and 2.81 m high.

The first Hummels reached the front in 1943 and were used particularly in the tank artillery sections of the tank divisions. They experienced their first major combat mission during Operation Citadel in the summer of 1943. Their combination of high firepower and sufficient all-terrain mobility enabled the heavy artillery to follow the tank formations even during mobile operations.
