The German tank destroyer Sd.Kfz. 138 Marder III was developed for the German Wehrmacht, based on the chassis of the outdated but available Czechoslovak-made Panzer 38(t) light tank.
The modification involved the introduction of the effective 7.5cm PaK 40 anti-tank gun in an open superstructure protected only by a sloped plate shield.
The Marder III Ausf. H had the engine installed in the rear of the vehicle and the weapon system in the middle to ensure better protection for the crew.
In this configuration, the Wehrmacht had an easy-to-manufacture tank destroyer with firepower that could counter the main battle tanks of the time.
It went into production in 1942 to meet the challenges of the theater of operations on the Eastern Front, but eventually saw service on all fronts by the end of the war.
