The Sturmpanzer IV, developed for infantry support in the Second World War, combined the proven chassis of the Panzer IV with a casemate with 100 mm front and 50 mm side armor as well as a powerful 15 cm cannon that could penetrate 160 mm 30 degree armor from a distance of 5 km.
Its variants can be broadly divided into early, mid and late production, the latter being the most numerous with 160 examples produced between May 1944 and March 1945.
The assessments of the crews of previous Brummbär had led to a new design of the fighting compartment and the commander's quarters as well as the partial use of steel wheels.
The Brummbär fought on the Eastern Front and in Italy
