The D version was the first variant of the Panther in the Second World War.
It offered a complete performance package with the firepower of the impressive 7.5 cm L/70 gun, excellent protection due to its sloping armour and manoeuvrability thanks to a 700 hp petrol engine.
Between January and September 1943, around 840 Ausf.Ds were produced, and it was used for the first time in the Battle of Kursk in July of the same year.
Although not everything went smoothly, the Panther was able to take out around 140 Soviet tanks from a distance of 1500 to 2000 metres, all while being perfectly protected by its sloping armour.
The D version was followed by the improved A and G versions and revolutionised German tank design.
It remained at the front until the end of hostilities
