The M60 entered service with the US Army in the early 1960s.
It was a further development of the M47 and M48 Patton tanks.
It became the US Army's most important MBT (Main Battle Tank) during the Cold War years.
By 1983, the American company Chrysler had produced 15000 units, and several versions were adopted by the armed forces of numerous countries around the world.
The main armament installed in the turret was the 105mm M68 gun.
In 1976 the new updated M60A3 version was developed.
Armor protection for the turret was increased, and the introduction of modern onboard electronic and fire control systems greatly improved its capabilities.
