As early as the 1950s, the British Army was asked to develop a successor to the Centurion battle tank that had been in service up until then.
The Centurion was one of the most successful tank designs of its time, but was still essentially based on the British tank doctrine of the Second World War and was developed as a cruiser tank.
Its successor was to be a pure battle tank (Main Battle Tank), which anticipated many developments in modern tank construction with innovative concepts such as the turret without a mantlet and the lying driver position. This led to the Chieftain, which for several decades was the most heavily armored battle tank in the western world, equipped with the most powerful cannon.
