As early as the 1950s, the British Army began to demand the development of a successor to the Centurion main battle tank, which had been in service until then.
Although the Centurion was one of the most successful tank designs of its time, it was essentially still based on the British tank doctrine of the Second World War and was developed as a cruiser tank.
Its successor was to be a pure Main Battle Tank, which anticipated many developments in modern tank design with innovative concepts such as the turret without fascia and the reclining driver position. This led to the Chieftain, which for several decades was the most heavily armoured main battle tank in the western world, equipped with the most powerful gun.
