In order to increase the survivability of the existing T-55 tanks, it was decided to subject them to an extensive modernization program.
The re-equipment of the GDR tanks took place in Czechoslovakia.
The following improvements were made:
- a Kladivo FL system developed and manufactured in the CSSR, which increases the effective combat distance from 1000 to 1600 m, was installed. It consists of a monochrome LEM in an external container on the BK; FL computer; wind speed meter and an armored folding mast at the rear of the turret roof with sensors for air pressure and temperature as well as a laser warning device that alerts the crew when the MBT is approached by an LEM of enemy MBTs, aircraft; Helicopter or artillery VB hits
- Track aprons that dampen the telltale dust development when driving and offer additional protection against light anti-tank projectiles.
- horseshoe-shaped additional metal bulkhead armor on both sides of the turret front.
- a smoke grenade system with a range of 250 m, which is automatically triggered by the laser warning device and creates a heat fog curtain that blocks visibility using the WBG.
- Additional armor on the upper bow plate as protection against sabot projectiles and anti-tank LFK. The greatly increased weight of all the additional armor requires increased engine power if the maneuverability of the MBT is not to suffer.
- a more powerful engine and a reinforced chassis to compensate for the increase in weight and for increased off-road capability. a heat protection cover for the main weapon
